For casual computer users, the built-in option: Windows Defender. It handles more obvious threats, runs silently, and won’t cost a cent. What it doesn’t do particularly well, however, is catch the tricky types of malware-those that hide in other apps, embed themselves in system files or run without being noticed until it’s too late.
That was enough of an issue that we went hunting for a better alternative.
Over the course of about a month, we installed 25 different antivirus suites on clean Windows 10 PCs and launched them against a battery of attacks. Here are our five winners.

1 – Best all-round security: Norton

If you don’t like fussing with your security settings and prefer to rely on your antivirus to handle most of the heavy lifting, Norton is your best choice. Norton operates with an “ahead of the attack” strategy and will try to identify a threat before it even makes it onto your computer.
During our tests, it managed to lock down 7,956 of 7,967 concurrent threats before we could even register a single problem.
The other 11 were flagged as soon as we tried to access them, preventing any further action. This approach translates to an antivirus solution you are unlikely to even notice working as it shields you from most online dangers, which makes it a near set-it-and-forget-it tool that’s ideal for setting up a computer for a non-tech-savvy user.

2 – Best for privacy: Bitdefender

Norton keeps threats at the front of its attack vector. Bitdefender instead believes that a threat will eventually get in and works to minimize any damage once it does, which leads it to take first place when it comes to protecting user privacy.
In our lab tests, Bitdefender’s firewall actively scanned outgoing traffic for data leaks.
This capability allowed it to detect keystroke-logging programs as they were recording credit card numbers and passwords on the keyboard, protecting our sensitive information even as it was being entered. That’s a capability that could be crucial for anyone regularly online banking or shopping, or who must meet compliance regulations around handling client data. Bitdefender also scans and secures network shared files, an aspect most competitors neglect entirely, closing another avenue for a virus to spread.
Bitdefender Test Scores:
- AV-TEST (April 2026): Protection 6/6 | Performance 6/6 | Usability 6/6 → 18/18 (TOP PRODUCT award)
- AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test (March 2026, 10,000 samples): 99.97% — the highest detection rate of any product tested that round

- Gold – Advanced Threat Protection (blocked 15 of 15 targeted attacks)
- Silver – Real-World Protection
- Bronze – Malware Protection
- Bronze – False Positives (19 total for the year)
- Top-Rated Product overall (5 Advanced+, 1 Advanced, 1 Standard across seven tests)
- Full Scan Time: ~2 hours
- System Slowdown: 1%–22%, depending on the task (browsing, downloads, installs, file copying)
- Detection Engine: Bitdefender’s own in-house engine (several other brands, including G Data and VIPRE, actually license Bitdefender’s engine)
Pricing (2026):

| Internet Security | ~$39.99/yr | 3 |
| Total Security | ~$49.99/yr | 5 |

3 – Best for kids/ gamers: Kaspersky

Many game-related infections happen by means of compromise of a gamer’s desire to add skins, mods or join a private server. Frequently, an installation guide prompts the user to agree to conditions, with the gamer blindly selecting ‘yes’.
Before long, their system is infected and riddled with viruses.
The malware, if not discovered immediately, can soon find itself running without warning within the system’s gaming files. Kaspersky can do an incredible job in such situations as it separates the game from any possible threats. It runs games normally but quarantines any suspicious code associated with mods and add-ons, preventing it from interfering with system hardware or files. If malware attempts to further attack system processes, Kaspersky can shut them down altogether.
We discovered during testing that it blocked all 14,258 infection samples introduced to it without impacting performance.
Kaspersky Test Scores:
Important disclosure: Kaspersky has been banned from sale in the United States by the U.S. Department of Commerce since October 2024. This makes it a non-option for American readers regardless of how well it scores in lab testing — this should be flagged at least as prominently as the test results below.
- AV-TEST (April 2026): Protection 6/6 | Performance 6/6 | Usability 6/6 → 18/18 (TOP PRODUCT award)
- AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test (March 2026, 10,000 samples): 99.94%
- AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test: Advanced+ in all seven 2025 test rounds
- AV-Comparatives 2025 Annual Awards:
- Gold – Malware Protection
- Gold – False Positives (only 9 for the year — the lowest of any product tested)
- Bronze – Real-World Protection
- Silver – Advanced Threat Protection
- Top-Rated Product overall
Pricing: Not listed here — since Kaspersky can’t legally be purchased in the U.S., publishing “2026 U.S. pricing” for it would be misleading for this audience.
4 – Best performance/lightweight: ESET NOD32

Antivirus can bog down a system’s performance with high resource consumption, including taking time to launch, and slowing down file operations and update schedules. ESET NOD32 comes stripped-down and lean and can scan files primarily while the system is at rest.
ESET logged an amazing speed for catching a single virus: 0.003 ms-a speed that allows you to compile code or edit video without the lag time commonly seen with bulkier suites.
Although it did score lower in some detection ratings, that compromise is a part of the design to ensure efficiency and speed without a dramatic hit in system performance-at roughly $20 a year for the paid version, there are better scanning tools. The performance benefits of ESET, however, may well make it worth the compromise for an individual or home office computer.
Best Free Antivirus: AVG Free AVG is a standout in a field dominated by companies offering either limited protection or frequent nagging for upgrades, or often even both. Not only does AVG Free not demand anything in return, but it also provided a top-notch detection score in our tests and was fully compliant in its tests for not collecting sensitive information about our use.
ESET® NOD32 Test Scores:
- AV-TEST (Jan–Feb 2026): Protection 6/6 | Usability 6/6 | Performance 5.5/6 → 17.5/18 (the only point lost is on system impact, not detection)
- AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test (March 2026, 10,000 samples): 99.95% — second-highest of the round
- AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test: ADVANCED+
- AV-Comparatives 2025 Annual Awards:
- Gold – Advanced Threat Protection (blocked 15 of 15 targeted attacks, tied with Bitdefender)
- Advanced+ in all seven individual test categories — the most consistent record of any product that year
- Top-Rated Product overall
- False Positive Rate: independently reported at roughly half that of McAfee, Microsoft, and Norton (though still higher than Bitdefender/Kaspersky)
- Notable trait: less cloud-dependent than most competitors, with more detection happening on-device — relevant for low-connectivity environments
Pricing (2026):
| Plan | Price | Devices |
|---|---|---|
| ESET HOME Security Essential | ~$39.99/yr | 1 |
| ESET HOME Security Essential | ~$69.99/yr | 5 |
5 – AVG’s detection skills proved quite robust.

The suite blocked all 4,684 ransomware and Trojan samples in tests during which demanding games were running in the background. AVG even detected viruses on our computer that another major competitor missed, clearing away malware from locations like a system’s temp directory where many security software packages would not detect their presence. Though its overall score in our privacy test was somewhat lower (80/100), AVG Free remains a more than sufficient answer for protection against typical threats if cost is a concern or you want an antivirus solution without all the added bells and whistles.
AVG Test Scores:
- AV-TEST (Jan–Feb 2026): Protection 6/6 | Usability 6/6 | Performance 5.5/6 → just under 18/18

- AV-Comparatives Performance Test (April 2026): ADVANCED+ — one of only 8 (of 20) products tested to reach this tier
- AV-Comparatives 2025 Annual Awards:
- Gold – Performance / Low System Impact (shared with Avast) — AVG’s standout category
- Detection Engine: Avast (AVG and Avast are sibling products under the same parent company)
Pricing (2026):
| Plan | Price | Devices |
