Minimum System Requirements for Windows 11

Microsoft set some pretty specific hardware requirements for Windows 11. Your computer needs to meet the following specs:

• Processor: 1 GHz or faster, 64-bit compatible, with at least 2 cores.
• RAM: At least 4 GB.
• Storage: At least 64 GB of free disk space.
• TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
• Secure Boot: A UEFI-compatible motherboard.
• DirectX: A graphics card that supports DirectX 12 or higher.
• Display: At least 720p resolution, 9 inches or larger.
• Internet connection: Required during setup for a Microsoft account.

The TPM 2.0 requirement.

Without a doubt the most controversial and frustrating requirement for longtime users is TPM 2.0. Because this new piece of hardware that gets thrown in the face of anyone trying to upgrade has essentially forced people whose computers don’t have it to go out and buy a new machine. Now TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is actually a dedicated security chip that either sits physically on the motherboard or is built right into the processor. And honestly it’s pretty necessary. Its job is to securely store encryption keys, passwords, digital certificates and biometric data like fingerprints. Completely isolated from the operating system and any software running on top of it. That’s a big deal and yeah, it should be there.

For example even if malware manages to sneak into your computer, it still can’t get to the data inside the TPM chip. On top of that TPM also monitors the boot process. It compares the system against its previously trusted state so it can detect if anything was tampered with or changed during startup. And that’s exactly why Windows 11 made this chip mandatory.

On top of all that security features like BitLocker disk encryption, Windows Hello biometric login and Secure Boot all rely directly on TPM 2.0 under the hood. The older standard TPM 1.2, was developed back in 2003 and doesn’t fully support today’s encryption algorithms. TPM 2.0 on the other hand, brings stronger algorithms, a more flexible architecture and way more comprehensive protection against modern cyber threats. Bottom line TPM 2.0 isn’t just some checkbox requirement for Windows 11. It’s the backbone of the whole system’s security architecture.

Here’s how to check whether you have TPM 2.0:

1. Press Windows + R on your keyboard.
2. Type tpm.msc and hit Enter.
3. In the window that opens, you can see your TPM version.

If you’re getting a “TPM not found” error, you may need to enable it from your BIOS/UEFI settings. On Intel systems this feature goes by “Intel PTT” and on AMD systems it’s called “AMD fTPM”.

So, how do you update your BIOS? (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte)

A lot of motherboard manufacturers (like ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.) introduce TPM 2.0 support through BIOS updates that get added later on. So the first thing you need to do is follow the steps below based on your motherboard brand.

But before you do anything, you need to find out your motherboard model. To do that, type msinfo32 into the Windows search bar and hit Enter. Look at the window that opens. The Baseboard Product line in there will give you your motherboard model. After that, do the BIOS update according to whichever of the motherboards below is yours.

Step by Step …

1 – Format the USB drive as FAT32. To do that:

Find the USB in the window that opens when you click on the Computer icon and follow these steps: Right-click the USB → Format → File system: FAT32 → Start

Note: It’s not absolutely required that the USB be empty, but keeping it clean is safer. So just add the BIOS package you’ll be downloading — that’s enough.

2 – Download the BIOS File.

• Go to the support page of whichever one — ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte, is your motherboard.
• Search for your motherboard model.
• Click on the BIOS tab.
• Download the top one (the most recent version).
• On top of that, also download the EZ Flash tool for ASUS, M-Flash for MSI and Q-Flash for Gigabyte. Like I said… whichever motherboard is yours, you’re only downloading the file that belongs to that one!
• Open the downloaded .zip file and copy the file that comes out of it directly into the USB FLASH drive (not inside any other folder)

3 – Open the Flash Tool.

Restart your computer. On the startup screen:

• Press DEL to enter the BIOS.
• Inside the BIOS, press F8 → the Flash software you downloaded will open automatically.

4 – Run the Update.

When Flash opens, select the Update BIOS option. You should see the USB there — click on it, select the setup file inside it. Confirm it and wait for the process to finish. It can take around 5-10 minutes, so make sure you wait it out. Whatever you do, do NOT turn off the computer during this time and absolutely do not pull out the USB either!..

5 – Done.

Once the update is complete the system will restart automatically. Then go into the BIOS, set the AMD fTPM or Intel PTT option to Enabled and save with F10. That’s all there is to it.. If you have trouble getting through these steps, you can also check out related videos on YouTube.

After you finish the BIOS update, restart your system. Then go into your BIOS settings (usually by pressing DEL or F2 during startup) and find the Intel PTT option for Intel systems, or AMD fTPM for AMD systems, and set it to Enabled. After that, save and exit with F10. Finally, in Windows, press Windows + R, type tpm.msc, and see that TPM 2.0 is now recognized.

Which processors are supported for Windows 11?

Microsoft has limited Windows 11 installation to only certain processor generations and newer. When this decision was announced, it caused a huge controversy and directly affected millions of users in a bad way.

When it comes to Intel processors Microsoft officially supports only 8th generation Coffee Lake and later. What that means is that 7th gen Kaby Lake processors like the Intel Core i7-7700, i5-7600 or i3-7100 released in 2017 and still running perfectly fine are considered insufficient for Windows 11. And yet these processors are still more than capable for everyday use. Microsoft’s main justification for drawing the line at 8th gen is that those chips and beyond offer stronger security instructions, better virtualization support and a more TPM 2.0-friendly architecture.

On the AMD side the minimum supported threshold is the Ryzen 3000 series and above, based on Zen 2 architecture. There’s an important catch here. The Ryzen 2000 series is built on Zen+ architecture and Microsoft left it off the supported list. So a capable 2018-era chip like the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, powerful as it is doesn’t meet Windows 11’s official requirements. Part of the reason is the security improvements that came with Zen 2 and part of it is that AMD’s fTPM (firmware TPM) support became much more stable starting with Zen 2. Of course, most AMD users have no idea about any of this. But they weren’t the only ones left out. Qualcomm users got caught up in this mess too.

On the Qualcomm side Snapdragon 850 and above are supported. This category covers mostly thin and light laptops running ARM architecture. Qualcomm’s Windows 11 support has really moved into the spotlight especially with the Copilot+ PC concept. Newer chips like the Snapdragon X Elite can fully take advantage of Windows 11’s AI-powered features.

So why did Microsoft want this change in the first place?

According to the official statement the decision is entirely focused on reliability and security. Microsoft had claimed that supported processors experience a crash-free rate of 99.8% on Windows 11 and that older generations couldn’t meet that stability threshold. Critics didn’t find that reasoning convincing enough and argued there was a commercial motive in the background, essentially to drive hardware upgrade sales. That debate got even more heated when some researchers suggested these restrictions had more to do with marketing strategy than any actual technical necessity.

So if your computer has something like an Intel 7th gen or AMD Ryzen 2000 series processor, the official upgrade path is simply not available to you.

How does it work?

That’s it! After that, you can buy a compatible replacement part, swap it in and go ahead with the upgrade. This is the most cost-effective approach out there and I’d recommend it.

Other ways to check if your hardware is incompatible.

1. Update your BIOS

On some motherboards TPM 2.0 support can be added through a BIOS update.

If your computer physically has a TPM 2.0 chip but you’re still getting a “TPM not found” or “TPM 1.2” error during the Windows 11 compatibility check. Don’t panic. The first thing you should do is update your BIOS. Some motherboard manufacturers ship with TPM 2.0 disabled by default or an older BIOS version might mean the feature just isn’t active on your system yet. On Intel-based systems this shows up in the BIOS menu as Intel PTT (Platform Trust Technology) and on AMD-based systems it’s AMD fTPM (Firmware TPM). These options let the processor handle TPM 2.0 functionality in firmware, without needing a separate physical TPM chip.

To update your BIOS, you’ll first need to know your motherboard’s brand and model. You can find that easily with a free tool like CPU-Z or by running the msinfo32 command directly. Then head over to the official support pages for ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock or whatever brand you’ve got, search your motherboard’s model number and download the latest BIOS version.

After you’ve finished the BIOS update, restart your system. Then go back into BIOS settings and set Intel PTT or AMD fTPM to Enabled. After that run the tpm.msc tool in Windows again to verify that TPM 2.0 is now being recognized. Because these simple steps have allowed thousands of users to make the jump to Windows 11 without buying new hardware.

2. Enable Secure Boot

Go into your BIOS/UEFI settings and turn on the Secure Boot option. It’s usually found under the “Boot” or “Security” menu. I won’t go into detail on this one since it’s a pretty straightforward toggle to flip.

If you really do need a hardware upgrade, what should you look at first?

Hardware to check first:

If your system is incompatible and you’re thinking about upgrading, here’s the priority order:

1. RAM: If you’re under 4 GB bump it up to at least 8 GB. (Useless if your motherboard doesn’t support it.)
2. SSD: If you’re still running an HDD switch to an SSD. It’ll boost performance and make the installation process a lot smoother.
3. Motherboard + Processor: This is the last thing you should look at. But if you need TPM 2.0 support, this is what you’ll have to tackle.

If you’ve gone through the solutions above one by one, you’ll now have a pretty clear answer to the question, is your hardware ready for Windows 11? But if you ask me, you can keep going with your old hardware for a while longer. You don’t need to rush out and wipe your OS to install a new one. That said if you’re dead set on making the switch to Windows 11, the right move is to do it alongside new hardware. Not try to force it onto old gear. Keep that in mind. I’ve been on iPhone for years. And somewhere along the way I picked up enough about photo transfers to know that most people are messing this up without realizing it. Not because they’re careless, just because nobody ever told them.

You spend real time getting a shot right. Good light, good angle, you wait for it. Then you drag it over to your computer the wrong way and something happens to it. Colors get a little flat. The sharpness isn’t quite there. And you don’t notice right away, but eventually you look at it on a bigger screen and think, huh, that’s not what I saw on my phone. Then you start blaming the camera. I’ve done it myself. Took me an embarrassingly long while to figure out the camera wasn’t the problem.

So here’s what I’ve learned.

First thing: stop sending photos through email or WhatsApp if you care about quality. I know it’s fast. I know it’s what everyone does. But both of those apps compress your images on the way out and you don’t get a warning or a choice, it just happens. You tell yourself “it’s only a few photos” and move on. But the original file is gone. What you got on the other end is smaller, worse and that’s permanent. I caught this first with ProRAW files I was pretty proud of. The shadow detail I’d worked to capture was just… not there anymore. Completely gone. That was the last time I used WhatsApp for photos. If you have to use them, dig into the settings and find the option to send files without changes. But honestly, I don’t even bother with that. I just don’t use them for this.

HEIC vs JPEG and why it actually matters.

iPhone shoots in HEIC by default. It’s a good format. Keeps the file size reasonable without throwing anything away. The problem is Windows doesn’t always know what to do with it, so people convert everything to JPEG and call it a day. That’s a real mistake.

JPEG is lossy. Every time a file gets saved as JPEG, some detail gets dropped to make it smaller. And you can’t get that back. There’s no undo. So if you’re converting your photos to JPEG just to make them easier to open, you’re doing permanent damage for the sake of convenience. What I did instead was install Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions on my Windows machine. It’s literally a few dollars. Takes five minutes, I think I paid $0.99 and after that HEIC files just open like anything else. Worth it without question. Just make sure your iCloud settings are sorted out first, because if they’re wrong, none of this other stuff matters anyway.

The iCloud setting that most people never check.

This one’s quiet. You’d never know it was a problem unless someone told you. If “Optimize iPhone Storage” is turned on, your phone isn’t keeping full resolution photos locally. It keeps smaller preview versions and stores the originals in the cloud. So when you grab photos off your phone, you’re getting the previews. Low quality and you have no idea.

The fix is just turning on “Download Originals“. In iCloud for Windows or the macOS Photos app, it’s in the settings. Flip it on. That’s really it. On my phone I have “Keep Originals” turned on in Settings and in iCloud I have full resolution downloads active. Every transfer comes out the same quality as what I shot. Set it once, never think about it again.

What about just using a cable?

Totally valid. Plugging in and copying directly cuts out all the cloud stuff entirely. No settings to second-guess, no compression, just files moving from one device to another. It’s the most straightforward method there is. The reason people don’t default to it is just that it’s more physical and more manual. You have to be at your desk, you have to find the cable, which, in my case, is always buried under something. Not a big deal, but it’s one more step.

If you want to do it: plug in your iPhone with USB-C or Lightning, tap Trust on the prompt that comes up, unlock your phone and open This PC on Windows. Your iPhone shows up like a flash drive. Open it, find the DCIM folder and your photos are all in there. Copy them over however you want.

One habit I’d actually recommend: inside DCIM you’ll find subfolders called things like 100APPLE, 101APPLE. Don’t just dump those on your computer as-is. Take a minute and sort them yourself by year and month. 2026 -> 2026-10 -> October photos in there. Sounds like extra work. It isn’t really. And the first time you need to find a specific photo from eight months ago, you’ll be glad you did it. Anyway. That’s the whole thing. The phone takes good photos. The question is just whether you let it stay that way on the way to your computer. A little attention to the method goes a long way.

If you’ve ever looked over an engineer’s shoulder while they spin a 100% finished physical simulation 3D model of something that has absolutely no real world existence at the time and wondered ‘how on earth does that exist?!’ then there is a very strong possibility that SolidWorks was the thing that allowed that miracle.

Exactly what is it?

It’s a parametric solid modelling package. That means a very complicated name for a piece of software where you build things in three dimensions and where every single dimension, every relationship between different components, stays linked. If you change one feature in a design then every other feature that is linked to it will automatically update. It can guide a design right from a concept on a napkin through to an all-ready-for-production-design, all on your computer screen.

The advantage of doing that all on screen is pretty clear – a mistake discovered in the software is essentially free. A mistake discovered after you’ve cut tooling is an entirely different conversation! It can fully simulate what the real world will do. Stress loads and fluid dynamics and heat – it simulates it all before even one physical component is manufactured.

You see SolidWorks in almost every sector; automotive, aerospace, medical instruments, everyday consumer goods and industrial machinery-if it was engineered with a level of detail that is worth nothing less than a precise specification, SolidWorks was probably involved. While individual parts are just as important as assemblies comprising thousands of individual components, there are specialisations to be found in built-in sheet metal tools, mould designs and welded fabrication designs that one cannot find in a general-purpose CAD tool. Photorealistic renderings to meet the demands of a marketing team, PDM integration to avoid file versioning problems and team work going haywire; this is a full suite of capabilities.

Therefore SolidWorks is certainly more than just a 3D drawing tool; it is effectively a complete engineering environment.

So what is new in 2025?

It’s seems less a ” here are some more shinny new bits” kind of release, and more the kind where someone actually sat down to clear out the millions of small little irritating things users have been tolerating for years.

The largest single change for many will probably be the new default Z axis up. On the face of it a small issue but once youve spend time re-orienting models for 3d printing or CNC cutting this little change could appear to be revolutionary. Sheet Metal users will welcome the addition of automatic bend notches on flat patterns reducing the work required to get parts into production.

In the parts arena ‘Chamfer Selection Accelerators’ do what it says on the box cutting the time to add chamfers to multiple edges dramatically. The assembly arena also sees benefits in two key areas with Large Design Review working fully with collision detection and the ability to copy parts along with advanced/mechanical mates which should ease the development of large mechanisms enormously. There’s also a new option to check for interference on surface bodies for those using mixed modelling techniques.

Drawings are simplified in 2025 with an automatic tool to fix broken dimensions (everybody who’s taken over another designers mess knows what this is for). PDM integration has also been improved so that file management can take place entirely within the application rather than having to pop between two programs.

The real installer will download as one file which, being the complete software package with all of the libraries and add-ons, is a chunky 25 Gigs in size. Furthermore, the installer is an intelligent beast. It first scans your system and downloads anything it will require from SolidWorks’ servers, e.g.,SQL Server or .NET Framework, and installs it for you. It even takes care of setting the Z-axis orientation, templates, etc during installation, so you do not spend hours setting basic things up.

Honestly, the licensed way of obtaining this software, if your work depends on it, is In my honest opinion, for anyone who has to work seriously with this software the licensed route is definitely the way to go. The individual download’s on the page above are all useful individually, but the one full installer package is so much more streamlined, and it does all the necessary components.

Finally, I should say that SolidWorks is not something that you can sit down with for an hour or two and work out the basics, there is a very steep learning curve with the system, however for anyone whose work involves high precision engineering, it is worth the time investment.

If one day you boot up your browser and it says that you now have a Google homepage by a name you’ve never heard of like ‘Search Baron’ or ‘Trovi’ and you don’t have a clue how to make that change, you’ve come to the right place. In essence, a Google homepage virus is essentially when your computer takes over what you have as a browser and makes the homepage anything it wants it to be-in these instances that would typically be ‘Search Baron’ or ‘Trovi’. Though, to get rid of a google homepage virus, it actually isn’t a virus, it just is quite annoying and you’ll have to find your own way to remove it if you want to get back your browser back to normal.

A ‘Google homepage virus‘ is technically called a browser hijacker, which are actually PUP’s, which stands for “Potentially Unwanted Programs“. What has happened is that a hijacker has gotten into your browser and decided to take over your homepage, your search engine and likely your new tab page so that you use a fake, advertisement riddled search engine that essentially makes money for whoever made it as you click through links that they provide.

How it got there:

This is the part that most people do not want to hear: you did this.

Not intentionally. You installed a free piece of software, maybe a pdf converter, video player or a browser game and you ran the installer without reading each step. Within the installer there was (almost certainly under ‘custom’ or ‘advanced’ setup which nobody uses) a pre-ticked checkbox labeled a “browser performance enhancer” or “search booster”. You clicked Next enough times and it came bundled.

This is a very popular route. The other is browser extensions. Somebody offers you a you-tube download or a download speed enhancer, you install the extension from some dodgy third party site and it silently takes over your browser settings, which it’s allowed to do as you said “Add to Chrome”.

Fake updates are still incredibly effective, despite everything. If you are on a website which tells you that you need to install an updated version of flash player, your Flash player does not need to be updated ( Flash has been obsolete since January 2020).

So why didn’t your antivirus detect it?

It’s asked all the time; why do I have antivirus running, then, and it didn’t detect this?

The programs aren’t technically viruses; they entered your system with what technically could be considered your permission – the ticked box that you did not read. Anti virus software’s only objective is to detect programs that enter without permission to destroy them.browser hijackers do not attempt to enter without permission nor will they directly cause harm to you or your system as such. However, browser hijackers do enter with permission and manipulate settings without asking, also bombarding you with pop ups.

The majority of antivirus systems ask 3 specific questions about the software that entered the system; can it delete your files, can it steal your password, or will it ransom your system?browser hijackers do none of the above and as such are a ‘grey’ area to many antivirus programs and go undetected.

The problem is not difficult to fix however. Within Malwarebytes click Settings Security and ensure the detection for PUPs and PUMs is enabled, other antivirus systems may require going into ‘Advanced’ settings.

How do I remove it really?

Once you run a scan with PUP detection enabled it should find and delete the program, but this will not automatically fix your browser settings which the hijacker sets independently of the program it installs. You need to do these yourself:

Chrome: Settings Search engine and there, you need to remove the unknown search engine (and perhaps even set Google as default. And in “On startup” make sure it is set to what you actually want)

Firefox: Settings Home and set your page back to what you want. Settings Search Default search engine and select Google or whichever one you would like

Safari: Preferences General and edit homepage; then click the search tab and set that as well.

While in any of your browser settings I would also visit the extensions area and remove anything which you didn’t explicitly remember installing, in the event of the latter just remove anything that is unknown because real extensions will normally show you clearly what they do.

Finally you may need to delete notifications from sites as these hijackers enable push notifications as a fallback system when the program itself is gone. Under settings for any of your browsers you should be able to find them within the Site Permissions area and disable notification permissions.

It really takes about half an hour once you know how, it is really nothing complex but just things that you are never shown.

Alternative method via search bar …

1. Click the search icon to the right of firefox’s address bar.
2. Find the google option in the dropdown list.
3. Click the make default button on the right.

The setting changes you made are saved automatically. Now every query you type into the address bar will be searched directly through google. If google does not appear in the list you can click on the manage other search engines option, add google and then set it as the default. After closing the settings you can immediately check if the process was successful by typing test into the address bar.

Other browsers are being changed in a similar way so I did not feel the need to write about all browsers.
