Avenging Spirit is an action game for the Game Boy. C.P. Brain developed and Jaleco published in 1991. You play as a ghost who has to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend.
What makes Avenging Spirit special is the “possession” mechanic. As a ghost you can possess the bodies of various enemies, each with their own special abilities. You can switch between characters to overcome obstacles, defeat enemies and progress through the levels. Your goal is to rescue your girlfriend and bring her captors to justice.
Avenging Spirit has received praise for its unique gameplay, tough levels and nostalgic value. It’s a cult classic among Game Boy fans and still enjoyed by retro gamers today.

Retro Gaming Goodness
Possession: The most important feature of Avenging Spirit is the possession mechanic. You can take control of enemies by touching them with your ghostly form. Each possessed character has special abilities like increased strength or projectile attacks that can be used to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies.
Level Design: The game has multiple levels, each with its own theme and challenges. You’ll travel through city streets, laboratories and haunted mansions. It never gets old.
Boss Battles: Like any good action game, Avenging Spirit has boss battles at the end of each level. You’ll need to use the abilities of the possessed characters to win.
Hidden Items and Secrets: Exploring the levels will reward you with hidden items and secrets like power-ups, extra lives and secret paths. Finding these hidden stuff will help you a lot in the game.
Two-Player Mode: The Game Boy version also has two player co-op mode so you can team up with a friend and play the game together.
Overall Avenging Spirit is a fun game by combining classic platforming with its unique possession mechanic. The gameplay, concept and nostalgia has made it a classic in the Game Boy library. Now let’s get into some of the secrets!
Secrets
The Game Boy version has some secrets too! Let’s check them out!
Hidden Bonus Stage: Some levels have secret doors that lead to hidden bonus stages. These stages have extra challenges and extra points or power-ups. Makes the hard stages a little easier and keeps you curious on what’s hidden where as you go through the game.
Power-up Locations: Some levels have hidden power-ups. These power-ups gives you extra abilities such as increased attack or temporary invincibility. You can reveal these hidden power-ups by breaking objects like chests or barrels. Nice feature isn’t it?
Secret Passages: Some levels have secret passages or walls that can be passed through. These passages leads to hidden areas with extra items or shortcuts. You can find these secrets by trying to pass through walls or interact with solid objects.
Extra Lives: If you play the game carefully you can collect all the hidden extra lives and get extra lives. They’re in hidden areas, I suggest you check those out. You can also get them by getting a certain number of bonus points.
Hidden Endings: Depending on your performance and actions throughout the game you can see multiple endings. You can see some of these by reaching certain goals or completing certain tasks. Of course you won’t see all of them. But if I can find it, that’s another story!
Time Attack Mode: After you complete the game a “Time Attack” mode is unlocked. This mode is to complete the game as fast as possible. I can say this is another way to make the game harder to play. Those who know from games like Super Mario knows similar stages.
Here’s a tip for you. To find these secrets, examine each level carefully, interact with objects and try different approaches.
