Recovering deleted photos

When you use Stellar to recover hard-drive photos, you’ll see several options — the most important rule is to start the recovery as soon as possible after deletion. Deleted files remain on disk until their space gets overwritten by new data, so the sooner you scan, the better your chance of a full recovery.

Tip: scan only for the photo file extensions you need (JPEG, PNG, RAW, etc.) — restricting the scan to specific extensions speeds everything up. If you know the deleted photo’s file name, search by name; that’s even faster.

After scanning, choose the folder or drive where the photo was stored before deletion. For example, if the photo was on the Desktop, scan the C:\ drive; if it was on an external drive, select that drive. Picking the correct drive is important. A quick scan will usually show the recoverable photo. When saving a recovered photo, always write it to a different drive than the one it came from — for example, if the deleted file was on C:\, save the recovered file to D:\. This prevents accidental overwriting during the recovery.

Recovering other deleted files

If the deleted file isn’t a photo — say it’s a Word document — pick the “Office Documents” or equivalent filter. That targets only Office file types and finds them faster. Also pay attention to destination disk space: large files require an equally large amount of free space on the drive where you save recovered data. Providing sufficient space improves success rates.

Recovering deleted videos

One of Stellar’s biggest strengths is video recovery. A lost photo might be re-shot or replaced online, but many videos are impossible to reproduce. To recover a video, select the Videos category in Stellar, choose the disk to scan, run the scan, and then save the found video to a different drive. In my testing and experience, video recovery success is very high — often around 90% for many files, depending on how much the disk has been used since deletion.

Stellar exposes a variety of recovery options once you start using it, but the key rules remain the same: scan early, narrow scans by file type when possible, choose the correct source drive, and always save recovered files to a different target drive. Follow those steps and Stellar will maximize your chance of bringing back the files you care about.
